This year’s diversity assembly contained both new and old elements. The assembly began with the tradition of students carrying the flags of different countries into the gym while football coach Andy Sims announced the students names and the countries represented by the flags.
A new element this year were the six word memoirs displayed on the screen. The memoirs were created by students and organized by senior Orunima Chakraborti, English teacher Maria Worthington, math teacher Sheryl Stein and librarian Abby Cornelius.
“Mrs. Worthington suggested doing six word memoirs and I loved the idea because they are short and sweet, and people can convey so much by manipulating their language and putting meaning into six words,” Chakraborti said.
Performances at the assembly included senior Gracie Schram singing “We are the Change,” Korean Pop Club’s dance performance, and a Bollywood fusion dance– a tradition of the diversity assembly.
“I think [the assembly] went really well. Everyone knows that our school is diverse, but no one takes the time to talk about it, so I think events like this make people appreciate BVN’s different cultures,” Athena Tran, Diversity Club member and flag walk organizer said.
