BVN Basketball Season Wrap-Up

Blue Valley North wins their first game of sub-state with a score of 57-45 over Olathe South

The Blue Valley North basketball season came to a close this past Friday night at Olathe North High School. The Mustangs went head-to-head with the Olathe North Eagles in the sub-state championship for a chance to go to Wichita and play in the State Championship tournament.

Earlier in the week, the Mustangs were able to defeat the Olathe South Falcons in their first sub-state game and advance to the championship. Despite having a late lead in the championship game, the Mustangs were on the bad end of some late game heroics.

As the clock was ticking down, an Olathe North guard drove in the lane and put up a shot that went in the basket, along with a whistle from the ref, giving them two points and a free throw to come. Prior to this shot, the team had a two point lead, but after the made free throw for Olathe North, the mustangs had fallen in their pursuit of another State Championship.

This season came to a bitter end, but the team had a very successful season with a very strong 14-8 record, full of great moments. Playing in arguably the toughest league in the state, the Eastern Kansas League, the Mustangs held their own and earned themselves the four seed in their sub-state regional.

The team finished with a respectable 9-5 record within the EKL, finishing third, behind League Champions Bishop Miege and 5A State Qualifier Blue Valley West.

This season was full of memories including¬†their season sweep of rival Blue Valley Northwest, something that hasn’t occurred in three years at North, along with a second straight win at the annual Hy Vee Shootout at Avila.
