Kotoka Kerr- Study Skills

Where did you work before this/Tell us a little bit about yourself?

“I worked with Joplin School District for a couple of years. Prior to that most of my years have been with the Olathe school district. I’m originally from the Bahamas, but I’ve moved quite a few places, so… I’ve lived several years in Florida, Colorado, New York- Brooklyn, New York- and I did my undergrad studies at City College of New York, and then I moved to Kansas and did my Master’s at MidAmerica Nazarene University.”

What made you come to come to North/What are you teaching?

“Study Skills.”

What brought you to North?

“My mother used to work for Blue Valley years ago- she was a para at West- and so she always talked about it and you know next door in Olathe, she always hyped up Blue Valley and so I said we will see what happens and it just worked out perfectly for me to move into high school and to be able to work in this classroom. Working with kids with special needs is something I really enjoy.”

What has your impression of North so far been?

“I like my co-workers, they seem really welcoming. It seems like this school is really focused on academics- academics is a big push here, and you get that sense from the teachers that you talk to, it is a welcoming place, everyone is real friendly and helpful.”

What do you want your future students to know about you?

“I want them to know that I like to laugh if there is a good joke and it’s appropriate, but I also want them to know that I am consistent and I like a routine and I like to stick with the routine.

I like for things to be fair, and I’d like for the kids to know that when they come into this room I am going to be fair with them.”

What are your goals?

“My goal is to just become familiarized with the students that I have as well as familiarized with Blue Valley North policies and the way they do business here.”

Anything else?

“I played in an all-girls band. I played the piano in high school and middle school and I played the trumpet, along with my sister who is a saxophone player.”
