Hunter Hayes: Making every moment count

Walking into the Hunter Hayes concert at the Sprint Center Nov. 15, I and the other attendees were  handed USO-inscribed LED wristbands that would later be used to connect to the light show. After the audience sat down, Hunter Hayes appeared in a pre-recorded video that was projected onto two big screens. Shortly after, the first opening band, The Railers, opened to a still arriving crowd. They were followed by country duo Dan and Shay who played for, and then took a selfie with, the whole stadium. After the selfie, the lights turned back on as their equipment was replaced by Hunter Hayes’. The overhead lights dimmed and then the crowd lit the arena with their wristbands. It was a beautiful production that took waving lighters in the air to a new level.

Hunter utilized his guitar, piano, and played the drums all while singing to his adoring fans. Hearing Hunter in person was surprisingly better than on his CDs. I would be surprised to find out if he even edits his voice for recordings. Singing my favorite song “Secret Love he was able to hit every note. Following a slew of songs from his latest album, “Storyline,” he stopped the music to thank our service members and to encourage people to keep their wristbands so long as they donate to USO, an organization that benefits veterans. Hunter appeared very sincere and promised a minimum donation of $10,000 at any event he does in his tour.

After his speech he took to the crowd, he jumped off the stage and made his way to a microphone that had been set up in the stairs between the seats. He followed this up with a few last songs that were met with a roar of applause. The encore that ensued consisted of a mashup of pop songs sung by all three of the bands. At the end of the night, Hunter Hayes had provided an exceptional performance that was enjoyed even by the accompanying dads.
