Mustangs Corral a Top 3 Finish at EKL

The Blue Valley North cross-country team competed in the Eastern Kansas League meet on Oct 16 at Bishop Miege High School. The teams competing along with the mustangs were BVNW, BVW, BVSW, BVH, Bishop Miege and Gardner-Edgerton.

The boys and girls teams have had lots of success this year including a boys second place finish at Olathe East Earlier this year and a girls finish in 4th at that meet as well.

“We’ve had personal bests on both the guys and the girls side and I think our athletes would agree we have a much stronger team than years before,” said Coach Laura O’Connell

The teams best performance before EKL  was a 3rd place finish from both boys and girls at the Bonner Springs Invitational back on Sept 20 where there were 34 teams competing.

Although the team has had great success, the team was determined to stay focused on EKL.

“The team and I are preparing for [EKL] just as we normally would. Its worked for the season so we don’t want to change much,” junior William Elliott said.

Preparing like normal really paid off for the stangs at this year’s EKL meet as the boys team finished in 3rd place overall while the girls finished 6th. Leading the way for the boys was Victor Gonzalez and for the girls, freshman Sophie Scott.

The team is really hoping they can take this high finish into regionals and make a run at state.

“We knew it would be really tough, but we knew it was definitely reachable. Everyone is feeling confident going into regionals which is important when running at big meets,” Elliott said.

The mustangs head into regionals next week at Shawnee Mission Park and with a team finish in the top three , the mustang cross country team will be state bound.

It has been 11 years since a Blue Valley North cross-country team has qualified for state and this could be the year.

Come out and support your mustangs at their regional meet and their run at state. Times are TBD.
