Varsity Tennis: First Part of the Season


The BVN boys varsity tennis team started off the season strong with a win over Shawnee Mission Northwest 16-2.

Connor Garrett won singles 8-7 (7-3).
Michael Paul won doubles with Ben Rohleder 8-3 and singles 8-1.
Ben Rohleder won singles 8-1 and doubles 8-3 with Michael Paul.
Michael Chu won singles 8-4.
Brady Flanagan won doubles with Carson Fournier and singles 8-5.
Jackson Bueno won singles 8-2 and doubles 8-0 with Raghav.
Ragav won doubles 8-0 with Jackson Bueno and singles 8-3.

Despite the easy win, Coach Tracy Johnson notes that the hardest matches are ahead.
“We played well against [Shawnee Mission] Northwest, but our next two matches will be tougher. Rockhurst and BVNW were varsity’s toughest matches last year and they have improved just as much as we have,” Johnson said.
True to Johnson’s prediction, Rockhurst was a tough match for BVN.

Carson Fournier lost to Joe Ibarra 0-6, 06.
Michael Rohleder lost to Sinjin Nair 0-6, 06.
Michael Paul lost to Mikey Michaelis 4-6. 3-6.
Michael Chu lost to Frank Paris 0-6, 1-6.
Raghav Gupta lost to Owen Dixon 3-6, 3-6.

Brady Flanagan and Carson Fournier lost to Jack Evans and Joe O’Connor 5-8.
Connor Garrett and Jackson Hubble lost to Joe Ibarra and Colin Klumb 2-8.
Ben and Michael Rohleder Beat Frank Paris and Owen Dixon 8-6.
Jackson Bueno and Michael Paul lost to Sinjin Nair and Mikey Michaelis 3-8.

“[Rockhurst] was definitely our toughest match last year and will probably be this year too,” junior Jackson Bueno said. “I don’t think we played poorly, They are just a better team.”
Bueno believes that the next toughest match against BVNW will be a good one and could go either way. He looks forward to another tough match.


BVN suffered another tough loss against BVNW on April 3.

Connor Garrett lost to Jonathan Lowe 5-7, 3-6.
Ben Rohleder lost to Brett White 2-6, 4-6.
Jackson Hubble lost to Yash Myalavarpu 2-6, 2-6.
Michael Rohleder lost to Caul Pearson 0-6, 3-6.
Jackson Bueno lost to Arvind Raghuraman 0-6 ,0-6.

Brady Flanagan and Carson Fournier lost to James Lowe and Brett White 1-6 after Fournier left with a hand injury.
Jackson Hubble and Michael Rohleder lost to Arvind Raghuraman and Yash Myalavarpu 3-8.
Ben Rohleder and Connor Garrett lost to Caul Pearson and James Lowe 3-8.
Michael Paul and Raghav Gupta lost to Charlie Anderson and Matt Strobel 6-8.
Jack Joyce and Sean Tudas lost to Alex Downing and Vinay Thiagarajan 4-8.
Steven Schmoll and Michael Chu lost to Kelln Wright and Tanner Harpenau 7-8 (2-7) in the tiebreaker.

“I don’t think we played particularly well. I know we can beat them and I don’t think the score shows our ability,” Bueno said.
Although the team got off to a bad start, Johnson believes that the rest of the season will improve.
“We have had our two toughest matches in the first three [matches],” Johnson said. “I see a lot of potential this year and I know we are capable of winning the rest of our matches.”
