The days of November creep closer and closer. With the new month comes Thanksgiving, leaves falling, sweaters and the Spotify Wrapped. Every year for the past four years, I have always wondered who is going to fill my top artists. Disappointing news dawned upon me last year when they announced my top artist. An artist I only listened to at the beginning of the year. This year, who would they choose?
Personally, my music taste has completely shifted from the beginning of the year. If I were to pick my top artists, it would be from the second half of the year because I prefer that music more now. Unfortunately, I’ve come across a pattern: Spotify always seems to only observe the music we listen to until May or June and stops there. I’ve always wondered how Spotify evaluates everyone’s top artists. It could be based on the amount of time we listen to an artist or the number of songs by that artist we’ve listened to. Even though I prefer the latter, the former is just more plausible. Accordingly, my top artist still might have a chance of being from the second half of the year because I believe that I have listened to them for a longer amount of time.
First and foremost, I know one of my top artists would be Conan Gray. Despite being a recent addiction, I have spent more time listening to his songs than I’ve spent on any other artist this year. Since Conan Gray is possibly my first top artist, one of his songs would naturally follow through and be one of my top songs. My guesses for the songs would be Maniac, Vodka Cranberry or Memories.
My second guess for one of my top five artists is Laufey. She ended up being an artist who has stayed consistent for me from the beginning of the year to now, which makes me think that she would be an accurate guess. Naturally, one of her songs will also hold a place in my top songs, which might be From the Start. It’s always a go-to song that holds a place in my main playlist, so I can’t deny it.
Staying in the same music genre, beabadobee will be another one of my top artists. Many of her songs are in my most recent playlists since. I have been listening to her for the past five months. Based on how long I have been listening to her and the pattern I’ve been noticing, she has a chance on my top five artists, but it will be a close competition
For the other two artists that will be on the main story of my Spotify Wrapped, I’m lost. There are so many artists I’ve listened to for an equal amount of time or barely at all, which means it could be any one of them. These artists range from Dua Lipa, a well-known pop artist, to Keshi, a somewhat infamous R&B artist. Spotify Wrapped evaluates music taste for about a year, and by that time, it’s sometimes hard to remember or recognize what music you listened to during the beginning of the year.
My final prediction is my top genre. My music for the past year covered various genres such as pop, R&B, rap, indie and more. However, most of the music I have been listening to has been pop and R&B. Even though I can’t narrow it down, I’m confident that one of these will be my top genre.
At the end of the day, Spotify will come up with a ranking of all the artists that have filled people’s playlists, made their days or understood their pain. This ranking may not be exactly what we want it to be, but it is usually accurate. With this, my predictions for my Spotify Wrapped have come to an end.
