Halloween costumes have been used as a form of self expression for a very long time. According to Billboard, the most popular costume in 2023 was Barbie, followed by a princess and Spiderman. There are some BVN students who are doing more unique costumes this holiday season.
Freshman Shereen Raina thinks this upcoming Halloween will be “fun” because, unlike past years, she’ll be able to celebrate in a house instead of an apartment this year. Raina believes as you get older, Halloween will be more fun because you can decorate your house. In addition to decorating, Raina will be making her costume this year.
“I was planning to be Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice, the 2005 movie,” Raina said. “It was the one specific scene where she has her hair up in a bun, and then she has little pearls in her hair.”
Raina chose this character because it’s less known and her curly hair matches the character’s. She said she got the costume idea from TikTok.
“Stick to TikTok [when finding a costume]. Don’t use the ones that have little slideshows because most of them are just cats,” Raina said. “Go on Pinterest, you would be able to find [a costume idea there] as well.”
Raina is planning to buy each item separately and combine them to make the costume. When it comes to people who think they’re too old to dress up, Raina says that there is no age that is too old.
“I think [people thinking they are too old to dress up for Halloween is] kinda stupid,” Raina said. “… You’re never too old just to have fun and dress up even if you’re just handing out candy; it’s fun too.”
Another person who is excited for Halloween is Senior Christian Eide because he gets to spend time with his friends and dress up as his favorite characters. This year his friends have a group costume.
“My friend was watching [“The Boys”], and he said that I looked like this character they called The Deep,” Eide said.
Eide decided to go as The Deep from “The Boys” and his friends will be dressing up as other characters from the show. Eide says this is his first unique costume and recommends “base it off your hobbies and what you like to do” when finding the perfect costume. He also has opinions similar to Raina’s regarding dressing up as you get older.
“You’re never too old to dress up. It’s all about the spirit and the atmosphere and having fun,” Eide said.
