The best part of Halloween besides the costumes is the movies. What movie screams “OG Halloween” more than “Beetlejuice?” I was skeptical at first when I heard they were making a sequel to “Beetlejuice.” Recently, sequels and remakes of movies have failed. Despite this, I had high expectations for this one, as Jenna Ortega would star in it, and Tim Burton would be the director again.
You could watch “Beetlejuice 2” without seeing the first movie but I would highly recommend seeing the first one so you are aware of the original characters. This movie takes place more than three decades after the first one. Lydia Deetz is now a host for a TV talk show, Ghost House. She has a daughter, Astrid, played by Jenna Ortega, who wants nothing to do with her mom. Lydia’s stepmother, Delia, informs Lydia that her father, Charles, has died in a gruesome accident. Lydia, Delia and Astrid travel to Winter River, Connecticut for Charles’ funeral. At the same time in the afterworld, Beetleguese is still madly in love with Lydia. Things get a bit complicated when his former wife, Delores, escapes captivity and goes on a murderous spree, draining the souls of the dead searching for him.
So what went right and wrong? If you are not used to Tim Burton’s films, then you will be super confused by this movie. If you happen to be familiar with his odd films, then it shouldn’t be a shock how “Beetlejuice 2” turned out. The first movie was probably one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever seen, and this sequel is no exception. The plot initially made sense, but I got confused somewhere along the way. It seemed like there was more than one thing happening at once. Something that really threw me off was the ending. It was very random, and not even the “Tim Burton kind of random.” It left some leeway for a possible third movie, though. With that being said, “Beetlejuice 2” was just as good as the original. The famous actors in the movie like Willem Dafoe and Danny Devito definitely made the movie better, even if they didn’t have that much screen time. I loved how they kept most of the original cast and how whimsy it was. The thing about “Beetlejuice” is that it’s not your typical scary Halloween movie; it’s fun and quirky.
In the end, I rate it 7.5/10. It wasn’t the kind of movie for me, however, I recommend it to anyone who loves the spirit of halloween and is a fan of the first movie.
