As teenagers, we forget the magic that kiddish movies made us feel. It’s hard to watch a movie made for kids these days because we assume we won’t be entertained. However, the newly released movie, “Goat”, brings back joy we didnt know we were missing.
Goat was released Feb. 13. It follows Will, a goat, who has a dream of becoming a roarball player. The only problem is he’s a medium. That’s something I found interesting about this movie. Instead of dividing the animals by prey and predator, like “Zootopia” or domestic and wild like “Secret Life of Pets”, the movie takes a different approach and divides the animals by size. Also, not to mention, one of the greatest roarball players of all time is a female. I love to see women’s representation, even in a movie meant for kids. The two main groups of animals are bigs and smalls, but Will likes to say he’s a medium. There hasn’t been a medium-sized player in roarball history. Of course, as anyone can guess, Will will be the first. This divide works perfectly with the context of roarball because it’s a parallel of our basketball today, and how tall, strong basketball players are essentially seen as the better and go to option.
Like any great movie, this one was based on a real-life story. None other than Stephen Curry, who is not only a character in the movie but a producer, too. Curry, who was seen as an underdog because of his small build, proved that he can not only play basketball but can also be one of the greatest players of all time. There are other similarities between Will and Curry. Such as the way they chew their mouth guard or the fact that they are fire shooters.
I saw the movie in theatres on Feb. 27. One of my favorite parts of this movie was how relatable it was. There was a scene where Will was pretending to shoot the last winning point. He gets all hyped up, and when he shoots, he misses. He then pretends time was added to the “clock” and takes another shot, and makes it. As a former basketball player, I think I can speak for most of us when I say that imagining taking the winning shot and then missing is a universal experience.
Although the plot was a bit predictable and it was obvious that Will’s team was going to win, it was still inspiring and tense. There was a moment when a key player on the team got injured, and I genuinely sank down in my seat. There were also moments I couldn’t stop laughing because of how funny something was. There were, in fact, a lot of cringy scenes too. I think one of my favorite parts was hearing the kids around the movie theatre laugh at those moments. It was so adorable hearing them laugh at a silly joke that I know I would have found funny at their age, too. Then, when I left the movie theatre, I had an urge to get something done.
Overall, I highly recommend seeing this movie in theaters before it leaves. For sure, bring your friends as well. And be prepared to be so motivated to do something afterwards.
