As we turn the corner into November here at BVN, all of the fall sports come to a close or are entering the playoffs. With so many incredible athletic programs here at the school, however, it may be hard to keep track, so here is a recap all of the fall sports teams’ seasons!
Boys Soccer
Starting off, the boys soccer team finished their regular season at 6-5-1. They started off hot with a strong rivalry win over Blue Valley Northwest before going on to win four more games straight, and then tied the defending champions, Blue Valley Southwest. Following a 5-0-1 start, the team hit a rough patch, going 1-5 in their next six games with heartbreaking one-point losses to Garden City in overtime, and Blue Valley West High School as well. To kick off the playoffs, they prevailed 3-1 against Lawrence High School. They played at Olathe East and lost 3-2, ending their playoff run.
Cross Country
The Mustangs cross country team battled through a long and tedious season this fall. Through multiple meets, they didn’t put up the most flashy results. In one of the biggest meets in Kansas, the Olathe Twilight, they placed 13th out of 16 teams. Later in the season when state qualifications came around, they were not able to put any athletes into the state meet, thus ending their season early.
Football
The football team has gone through a rollercoaster of a season. After starting off with a loss to their rivals, Blue Valley Northwest, the Mustangs won two games in a row at Shawnee Mission North and then at Blue Valley Southwest in walkoff fashion. Following their first two-win season since 2020-21, they began to dive. In their next two games, they were held to just seven points by Blue Valley West and Blue Valley High, who both put up more than 30, losing head coach Gene Weir and deferring to Interim HC Blake Mudd. They almost upset St. James Academy, but lost just 28-20. To cap off their regular season, they pulled off an upset at Bishop Miege before falling short of the number one team in the state, Saint Thomas Aquinas, to finish 3-5. They’ll face KC-Washington High School to kick off their KSHSAA 5A playoff run.
Girls Golf
Blue Valley North’s girls golf had an impressive season this fall. They started off slow, getting 6th out of 10 as a team in the Lady Legends Golf Classic, but they turned it around and showed out at the EKL tournament, with Ainsley Belford, Gabriella Green, and Karmen Hayslett all placing within the top five individually, and the team as a whole earning themselves second place in the tournament. In the Blue Valley Cup, the Mustangs also placed second with Gabriella Green and Karmen Hayslett getting the number one and two individual spots. Just before State, at the Queens of the Green Classic, the girls placed first. They then earned second at 6A Regionals, then performed well at State, getting 5th, and with Gabriella Green getting 8th individually.
Girls Tennis
Girls tennis, one of the earliest starting of all of the fall sports, performed well at tournament after tournament before ultimately getting 3rd at State. Their JV squad earned 1st place in the team’s first time ever performing at the Pembroke tournament. The future looks promising for the girls tennis team!
Volleyball
Last but certainly not least, the girls volleyball team had a dominant season this year, going 20-14 in the regular season with big wins over Olathe Northwest and Basehor-Lindewood. Unfortunately, their season ended at sub-state in a close battle with Mill Valley High School.
Overall, the Blue Valley North fall sports teams showed out this year just like they always do. For those teams still competing that haven’t finished up their season quite yet, good luck in the playoffs! Just a few more weeks until we have the winter sports to look forward to. Go Mustangs!
